Five NFL players, including four from the Detroit Lions, have been suspended for violations of the league’s gambling policy, the NFL announced on Friday.
The National Football League (NFL) suspended five players, including four from the Detroit Lions, and one from Washington Commanders, for violating the league’s gambling policy. On Friday afternoon the NFL announced the suspension news of the players.
Detroit Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore, and Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney was indefinitely got suspended from the league at least for a year. However, Detroit Lions wide receivers Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill have been suspended six games apiece.
The NFL has not confirmed whether the plays in the Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore bet have anything to do with the team Detroit Lions. After the suspension was announced, the Lions released wide receiver Cephus and safety Moore. While Berryhill, Cephus, and Moore barely played for the Lions last year, the biggest blow to the team Lions was Jameson Williams missing his first six games.
Shortly after the suspensions were handed down, the Lions announced that they have released Cephus and Moore. The suspensions for Cephus and Moore resulted from the two players betting on NFL games. The NFL did not indicate whether the games involved the Lions. Williams and Berryhill, meanwhile, did not bet on NFL games but placed bets from an NFL facility. Their six-game suspensions will start on the final roster cut to date. Berryhill, Cephus, and Moore all played sparingly for the Lions last season.
Jameson Williams, the former No. 1 player and the 12th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft missed the first 11 games last season because of a torn ACL. He only managed to catch one pass, but it was a 41-yard touchdown. Berryhill and Williams did not bet on NFL games but placed their bets from an NFL site. Their six-game suspension will begin on the day of the final roster cut.
The NFL has a strict anti-game policy for players, coaches, and other employees in the league. The league’s policy is intended to maintain the integrity of the game and prevent any conflict of interest that may arise from players or other league employees betting on NFL games. The league takes gambling violations very seriously and has issued suspensions and fines to players and other employees in the past.
