Brock Purdy to attend 49ers offseason workouts, on track in recovery from elbow surgery
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy plans to participate in the team’s voluntary offseason workouts despite recent elbow surgery. Purdy had surgery on March 10 to repair his right UCL, and he says his recovery is going well. He won’t be able to throw until June but plans to work on his lower-body strength and conditioning.
Brock Purdy’s participation in the offseason program is a positive sign of his rehab progress. If there were any complications, he would likely remain in Arizona for rehab. Although he can’t throw yet, he looks forward to getting back on the team and studying the playbook.
Brock Purdy’s injury has opened up the possibility of other quarterbacks, such as Trey Lance, competing for the starting job. However, Brock Purdy remains the favorite to win the job if he is healthy. Coach Kyle Shanahan indicated last month that Purdy might not be ready to start in Week 1, which could give Lance or Sam Darnold a chance to win the job.
Despite the potential competition, Brock Purdy says he and Lance have a good relationship and have kept in touch during his recovery. They have been messaging each other regularly and keeping track of each other’s progress. Purdy is excited to move back to California and start working with the team again.
Last season, Brock Purdy performed well and guided Shanahan’s offense with confidence. However, he still has room for improvement, especially in his mental game. Off-season workouts will be critical for players like Purdy to develop and take the next step in their careers. Although there isn’t much football during the offseason, meetings and video sessions like the one Purdy will be participating in this week are an essential part of the building blocks, especially for younger players.
“We’ve been shooting and keeping each other texts and making sure we’re all good,” Purdy said. “He’s obviously been reaching out a bunch since my surgery and (during the recovery process), making sure things are good. I know he’s throwing down in Texas and looking good. So I’m really excited about that.
“And we’re all excited to get back together in California and learn the playbook together and help each other. We obviously want what’s best for each other. We’re in a lot of contacts, Texting each other all the time. It’s been great.
Purdy’s attendance at offseason workouts is an encouraging sign for the 49ers as it indicates progress in his rehab. Competition for the starting quarterback job will be tough, but Purdy remains the favorite if he’s healthy. Off-season workouts will be important for all players, including Purdy, to develop and improve their skills.
